Bear was our 2nd Livestock Guardian Dog. He is a born and bred Livestock Guardian Dog. His instincts to guard and protect his stock are just amazing! He is great with his Goats, Chickens, Ducks, Rabbits, Pigs & any other animal I bring on my farm! He's calm and mellow but don't let that fool you. He is VERY serious about his job. I could not ask for a better dog! Bear is CLEAR of Degenerative Myelopathy & Canine Multifocal Retinopathy by DNA testing!! |
I named her River because we drove over a big River on my way to get her. Oddly enough, she grew up obsessed with water. It is rare to get a DRY picture of her! She loves to swim, snorkel and play in water.

River was our 1st stock guardian. A "cheap" craigslist "Livestock Guardian Puppy". I drove several hours to pick her up and was met by a flea covered half wild puppy. When I met her in person I was ready to turn around and leave but I had driven SO far. I honestly felt bad for her. A LOT of work, several vet bills later and a few years later she turned out to be an good guardian. It took her a long time to learn chickens were friend, not food. She guards her home and barks the alarm when anything is off. She is great with her goats.
She has a deep hated for the coyotes that come up and is determined to catch one. She will chase them off the property and all the way back to their creek bed. Boy can she move too! Her smaller size leaves her very agile and fast. River is spayed. She developed a likely congenital defect that caused her eyelid to turn inward! (OUCH!) She didn't have it when I brought her home but it developed a few weeks later. Our vet did an AMAZING job surgically correcting it as now you would never know!
